Beethoven descobriu sua perda de audição em 1797, tornando-se funcionalmente surdo (nunca completamente) por volta de 1817-1820. Entretanto, a 5ª Sinfonia foi composta entre 1804 e 1807, sendo estreada em 1808, período em que Beethoven ainda não estava funcionalmente surdo. Não há registros sobre a verdadeira inspiração para o ritmo e a melodia da 5ª Sinfonia. Esse ritmo, contudo, já tinha sido utilizado por Beethoven, Mozart e Haydn em diversas obras anteriores à criação da 5ª Sinfonia. Beethoven detestava mencionar qualquer inspiração cuja origem divina, pelo menos quando se tratava de composição. (Este comentário é em resposta àqueles que espalham desinformação alheiamente sem confirmar se o que dizem é verídico)
